Schnapps Idea Red Root is a local recreation of the traditional Bavarian liqueur made with the root of the tormentil flower (also called Blutwurz). The Schnapps Idea version is made on a base of their excellent apple brandy and sweetened with locally sourced bush honey. Straight off the bat, that quality native honey dominates the nose. It’s a lovely smell, and there are also notes of rosehip and orange peel. I’ll admit I’ve never tried traditional Blutwurz, so my frame of reference is non-existent, but it’s a delicious drink – sweet but not cloying and with a great apple skin freshness on the finish. Immediately, I’m thinking about using this in cocktails where some other honey liqueur like DOM Benedictine or Drambuie might show up for a fresher version. There’s a touch of heat on the finish, but overall this is a really fun, well-balanced liqueur.
