Wheat whiskies are surprisingly scarce in Australia despite wheat being our #1 grain product. With its subtle flavour and low cost, wheat usually finds its way into liquor bottles in the form of highly recitified neutral spirit used as a base for vodkas, gins, RTDs and liqueurs. Whipper Snapper Wheat Whiskey is made from hard red winter wheat grown in the Narrogin region of WA and aged for a minimum of four years in charred, virgin American oak barrels, offering complex, well-integrated toastiness on the nose. You could be forgiven for mistaking this for a bourbon given that American oak quality, but there’s an underlying grain softness here that’s unmistakably Aussie. The sweet fruit on the palate is soft and approachable, wearing the 45% abv well with notes of licorice and ripe peach. A wonderful local interpretation of a lesser-known American-style whiskey; this is well worth a look even if bourbon isn’t your jam.
