A few kilometres can make a remarkable difference to a wine. Coldstream Hills’ 2025 Single Vineyard and Reserve Collection traces that shift across the Yarra Valley, from Beenak’s cooler heights to Deer Farm’s steep slopes near Gladysdale. The collection of six wines, which includes three chardonnays and three pinot noirs, shows how much site, season and blending each have their say.

“Despite the warm conditions and early start to vintage, the growing season was characterised by timely rainfall and settled conditions during flowering,” says Coldstream Hills winemaker Andrew Fleming. “The ripening season followed with warmth without extremes, even ripening and timely quenching rainfall.” Healthy, evenly ripened fruit gave the team options. “We look for overall balance and don’t pick on numbers despite our surprise at how early the harvest began,” Andrew says.

The single-vineyard chardonnays make a neat comparison. “Beenak is a cooler and slightly more elevated site in the Upper Yarra and covers a range of slopes and aspects,” Andrew says. Beenak Vineyard Chardonnay 2025 brings grapefruit, lime pith and white florals, with mineral notes and crystalline acidity. Deer Farm Vineyard Chardonnay 2025 has more texture, layering citrus, stone fruit and slate with a touch of nougat.

Switch to pinot noir and the contrast continues. Beenak Vineyard Pinot Noir 2025 offers sour cherry, raspberry and earthy savouriness, held in fine focus. Deer Farm Vineyard Pinot Noir 2025 moves towards darker cherry and graphite, alongside rose petal, silky tannins and subtle whole-bunch spice. “Its wines are generally more expressive and textural than Beenak,” Andrew says of Deer Farm. Neither wine needs to shout.

The Reserves bring selected parcels together. “It’s a bit like blending – additional components can bring nuances and complexity to a wine,” Andrew says. Reserve Chardonnay 2025 draws on parcels including Briarston and the Coldstream Hills House blocks, bringing white peach, citrus and almond meal to a layered, nutty palate. Reserve Pinot Noir 2025 completes the set with dark cherry, Satsuma plum, herbs and spice, backed by persistent tannins and cellaring potential.
