Millsheds Highland Vodka is one of a handful of vodkas produced in Australia from a grape spirit base, rather than a grain base as is far more common. Generally, with a grape-based vodka you would expect to see a bit more floral and citrus character compared to a grain-based vodka, and that’s certainly true here, with a green, perfumed nose that has a lot more obvious character than a standard neutral vodka. There’s great texture and sweetness on the palate, with a slightly vegetal and bitter finish that I can see working really well in a dirty martini, or in a citrusy cocktail like a cosmopolitan. This is a vodka for those who actually want their spirit to have some character and presence, and not simply a neutral vehicle for alcohol, so it won’t be to everyone’s taste. But that robust character is why we look to craft over commercial brands.
