I’m a massive rye whisky fan, and a big supporter of this style in the Australian context. This single-barrel expression is produced from a mash of 85% rye and 15% malted barley, the rye grains sourced from the the Fuchsbichler family farm in Bruce Rock, WA, who have been growing an heirloom German rye strain there for over a century. The result is a whisky bursting with the fresh aroma of freshly cut apples dusted with cinnamon, pumpernickel spice and new oak all working in harmony, while missing the dill pickle notes that turn some people off American ryes. At 48%, the alcohol is very well controlled and the cask choice is spot on, with a sweet mid-palate and lingering carrot-cake spices through the finish. A fun and fresh rye that’s a great expression of the grain’s natural quality.
