Shaun Crinion likes to have a hand in everything. A meticulous winemaker with a thoughtful approach, hands-on with the process but never heavy-handed in the winery, he has built long-term relationships with growers and sources fruit based on site, clone, vine age and sustainable viticulture. Founded in 2009, Dappled Wines began as a project making wine for family and friends, drawing on Shaun’s nearly 20 years of work (his CV is gilded in gold) and study in the industry. The small scale leaves little room for error. Shaun uses native yeasts, gentle pressings and makes careful decisions about whole bunch, ferment vessels and lees. It’s meticulous work, and the latest releases show the rewards. The ’24 Fin de la Terre Single Vineyard Syrah received 97 points, while the Les Vergers Single Vineyard Chardonnay and Champs de Cerises Single Vineyard Pinot Noir each scored 96. The Limited Release Tradition Cabernets 2024, made from fruit grown by Simon Peirce at Steels Creek Vineyard, earned 95. These wines are in scarce supply, and the mailing list is essential for release alerts if you hope to secure a bottle or dozen; all of the above-mentioned wines are also Special Value. Shaun’s fastidiousness is our gain. The trick is getting to the wines before everyone else does. – KB
