Cockfighter's Ghost

New South Wales | Hunter Valley

Our Review

Once the less-expensive sibling of Pooles Rock, Cockfighter’s Ghost is now an autonomous suite of slick, conventionally made wines. While there are few surprises across a range that delivers regional staples, the elevated Single Vineyard line is sourced from the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale, rather than the perceived home turf of the Hunter. A Reserve range delivers a fortified from the Hunter and a cabernet from Coonawarra, making it open season on interregional hunting. The Black Label suite, however, brings the brand back to the hearth, with Hunter Valley fruit comprising all but the shiraz which is sourced from nearby Gundagai. The wines can be tasted at the Pooles Rock cellar door, along with other wines across the Agnew Family holdings. -NED GOODWIN MW
