Standish has just released its 2023 wines – championing the 'New Barossa' style of winemaking

Cult wine brand The Standish Wine Company – led by sixth-generation Barossa winemaker Dan Standish – has just released its latest flagship collection. These four wines are all that is produced by Standish each year – and are comprised of the 2023 The Standish Shiraz, 2023 The Relic Shiraz/Viognier, 2023 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz and 2023 Lamella Shiraz. 

Each of these Barossan wines comes from a single vineyard – The Relic coming from an east-facing vineyard in Krondorf, and the Lamella from the ancient shiraz vines of the Stonegarden vineyard just near Springton in the Eden Valley. 

The remaining two wines are from the west. The Schubert Theorem hails from the Schubert vineyard on Roennfeldt Road, Marananga, and The Standish from the Laycock vineyard in the western parish of Greenock.

The Standish leitmotif is fruit purity and transparency of site, leading to the creation of profound shiraz wines. This style of wines has helped Dan Standish be seen as a leader of the ‘New Barossa’. Instead of being characterised by wines of robust alcohol and ripe fruit characters (as is seen in ‘Old Barossa’ styles), his wines are known for their freshness and purity – all the while still being bold and full-bodied – albeit more 'open' with savoury undertones.
 

He is one of the greatest Australian winemakers out there right now, having honed his craft making wine in the Rhône Valley, Spain and US, before working as the winemaker at Torbreck and opening Standish Wines. He has built this brand into a cult favourite among oenophiles, with his wines often selling out soon after release.

Speaking to this season, Dan shared, “A gentle elongated ripening created a special vintage giving us wines of great lusciousness and complexity. 

“Crunchy forefront tannins from the grape skins in conjunction with mellow rounder toning, mouth filling tannin from riper grape seeds. Grip and drive from the lignified stalks alongside the invigorating natural acidity retained due to the cool season, all harmonising to give billowy flow and incredible intricacy.”

All in all, Dan sees these as “some of our most complex and captivating wines to date.”
