King Island Distillery Bass Strait Martha's Moonshine Whisky
While 'moonshine' essentially means an unaged, corn-based whisky of the kind produced illicitly in the American South during prohibition, there’s no real definition in law. There are also long traditions of illicit whisky making in Ireland, Scotland and Australia, but those spirits are usually referred to by other names like 'poitin'. Martha’s Moonshine is made with malted barley and 'other grains', making it more like the Irish version than the American one. On the nose, berries and licorice offer a joyful lolly bag of aromas. It has a smooth and easy-drinking palate with good texture and a nice grainy finish. I wouldn’t mind a little more texture and general oomph, but this is unlikely to offend anyone (as many moonshines would). I’d be happy to swig this on a North Carolina front porch any day.
