But before you dive into the exhaustive list of Australia's best sweet wines, you can get to know the current winner of our Sweet Wine of the Year award – the 2015 Vin Pretto from Dal Zotto Wines.

"A declining category, not in quality but in volume. These wines deserve their place at the table as the main event, not an afterthought. Pair them with savoury and umami-laden dishes and watch them sing. A well-deserved win for the Dal Zotto family, who never waver in crafting wines of tradition. Perhaps this Trebbiano Vin Pretto – a wine crafted with the Passito method – is the prime example of the philosophy, with its months of winemaking dedication." – Katrina Butler

A taste of Italian winemaking tradition, vin pretto, in this sweet-hearted delight of a dessert wine. Trebbiano grapes are dried on racks for months before being pressed and fermented in small oak barriques or caratelli. It is painstaking time-wise and worth it, such is the nutty, honeyed sweet result. A little finer than the '14 but no less intense in dried fruits, candied citrus, honeyed gingerbread, marzipan, toasted hazelnuts, butterscotch and malt. Luscious yet finishing with impressive balance and plenty of style. 375ml. – Jeni Port
