Pups and pours: eight dog-friendly cellar doors to visit

By Halliday Promotion

If you have a four-legged best friend and love a winery visit, we've collated a list of eight cellar doors across Australia perfect for you.

Exploring a new winery and drinking delicious wine with your four-legged best friend by your side sounds like a dream.

Luckily for us, many wineries across Australia make this dream a reality by being dog-friendly. Not only are you invited to bring your dog along for your visit, but some of the wineries also offer dog-specific treats – something your dogs will enjoy just as much as you enjoy your glass of wine.

Below we have highlighted eight dog-friendly cellar doors that would be perfect to visit this summer. They are located in regions across Australia, including Victoria's Macedon Ranges and Great Western, the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia's Margaret River.

Learn what makes them all a great cellar door experience, for both you and your fur baby, and then make sure you add your favourites to your must-visit list.

Attwoods, Macedon Ranges

Attwoods cellar door with dogs

Cellar door manager Jane Walsh says: We endeavour to make true cool-climate pinot noir and chardonnay, with a focus on Ballarat and Macedon Ranges. This unique part of Australia has a continental climate, similar to the cool climate of Burgundy, France. We are ultra-boutique, making minimal intervention wines reflective of vintage and terroir.

H. What makes your cellar door unique?
JW. Our cellar door is in Glenlyon, just 10 minutes from Daylesford. The tasting room and stunning gardens are dog friendly and children are most welcome. It features a provincial-style dining room serving a French bistro menu, as well as casual food and grazing boards on beautiful decking or gardens overlooking the vines. Bring a picnic blanket and stay the whole day!

H. What makes your winery dog-friendly?
JW. Our dog guests are welcome in all of the outside spaces (on the lead) and also inside the tasting room, with consideration to our other guests.

H. What would you recommend for a great visit?
JW. Don’t miss a grazing board and a premium wine tasting experience – the best way to taste the wines from the vines surrounding you, especially when paired with locally-made produce.

Black & Ginger, Great Western

Black and ginger cellar door with dogs

Sales and brand manager Lucy Black says: Established in 2015, Black & Ginger is a small-batch winery producing handcrafted, award-winning Grampians wines with a passion for the alternative. We grow certified organic fruit at Hounds Run Vineyard and source some fruit from local growers in the Grampians and neighbouring wine regions. Many of our wines are named after women who’ve shaped our lives.

H. What makes your cellar door unique?
LB. Our wine shed in Pomonal is a laid-back, eclectic hideaway at the base of the Grampians – vintage furniture, lounges to sink into and board games. Tastings are conversational. It’s the kind of place you settle in for a tasting and don’t leave for hours, especially if Barney’s Bar & Bistro next door brings lunch to your table.

H. What makes your winery dog-friendly?
LB. We’re dog people through and through – our vineyard is called Hounds Run, after all. Dogs are welcome inside the wine shed, there are dog beds outside so they can stretch out in comfort, and there’s always a water bowl out. Bring your fur baby on a lead and they’ll fit right in.

H. What would you recommend for a great visit?
LB. Try Jam & Juice, our silent disco tasting. Pick four wines, pop on headphones and play the track our team has matched to each pour – on an old-school Discman or our Spotify playlist. Make sure our 2025 Rapunzel Riesling, just named in Halliday’s Top 100, makes your four.

Briar Ridge, Hunter Valley

XX

Winemaker Andrew Duff says: Briar Ridge is where tradition meets curiosity. With more than 50 years of winemaking behind us, our Mount View vineyard pairs classic Hunter favourites with alternative varieties, made by award-winning winemaker Andrew Duff. Visit with an open mind and you’ll discover a different side of the Hunter, with exceptional wines and mountain views to match.

H. What makes your cellar door unique?
AD. Briar Ridge is a relaxed place to slow down. Picnic on the large lawn with family and dogs, or head up to the veranda, which looks out over the grounds and vineyards. Inside, a hand-illustrated map of the property reflects our heritage. Our team is a big reason people return.

H. What makes your winery dog-friendly?
AD. Dogs are as welcome as their owners, both inside and outside. Order a Pooch Platter, a charcuterie board made just for dogs, or take some treats home. This spring, our Pup Pops help four-legged visitors cool off. Bring yours along – they can make themselves at home on the lounge or spread out on the grass. No need to leave anyone behind.

H. What would you recommend for a great visit?
AD. Start with our signature cellar door tasting. It moves through the Varietal, Stockhausen and Limited Release collections, giving you a taste of our full range. Alternative whites like albariño and fiano have made us better known in recent years, but our history is Hunter shiraz, grown in Tallavera vineyard’s red dirt over shale and limestone. Add a cheese or charcuterie board to extend your experience and stay a while.

H. What makes your winery dog-friendly?
